Nasal Wash Info
This nasal wash procedure uses a nasal wash pot or netti pot, which looks like a small pitcher with a spout, containing a salt water solution. The reason this is done is to clean and help rehabilitate the nasal and sinus area. Most health food stores sell nasal wash pots or netti pots.
Instructions
- Bring a large glass of warm bottled, filtered, or distilled water into the bathroom.
- Turn on the shower. A bath is also OK; but in the beginning, a lot of mucus may come out, making a shower preferable.
- Put ½ teaspoon of non-iodized sea salt (from health food store) into netti pot (Keep a ziplock bag of the salt and measuring spoon in bathroom.). Hold netti pot with 1 hand with finger over the spout. Pour as much of the warm bottled or filtered water, as you can, into the netti pot. You now have a mild saline solution. Note: Use regular granular salt, not rock salt.
- Take the netti pot, and get into the shower with your back to the shower stream. Cover pot with your palm and shake it to mix. Place the netti pot spout against the entry nostril. Tilt your head side ways, raise the netti pot handle, and pouring begins. The saline solution should go into this nostril, and it should come out the other (exit) nostril. Now, you can tilt your head also toward the rear. The time to complete the wash of this nostril is about a count of 12. Once complete, close the entry nostril with your finger, and blow out though the other nostril until it is cleared of solution. It may help for some people to bend at the waist and blow out to clear. You should have enough solution remaining in the netti pot to perform the same procedure on the other nostril. By the way, if saline solution drains into your mouth, just spit it out. You should gargle with left over solution.
- This netti wash should be done at least once daily for best results. A ceramic netti pot is fragile. So, be careful with it.
